VERY FORMAL FURNITURE

1983

Javier Mariscal collaborated with designer Pepe Cortés and publisher BD Ediciones de Diseño to create the collection Muebles Muyformales, a series of pieces that ironically challenged the codes of conventional design. Far from "formal", these furniture and objects were expressive, drawn almost freehand, and saturated with graphic references, comics, popular culture and an irreverent and playful attitude.

BD, founded in Barcelona in the 70's, was a pioneer in the design of author design and the production of pieces that crossed the border between art and furniture. In this context, Mariscal found total creative freedom to develop his own gestural language, giving rise to objects such as the Artista Table, the Kleemet Rug, the BCNB Furniture or the Rocafort, Pekín and Autol lamps, among many others.

The collection, in addition to inaugurating a new way of understanding domestic design, anticipated the postmodern sensibility from a Mediterranean and personal point of view. Muebles Muyformales was also the beginning of a sustained collaboration between Mariscal and BD, which would continue in the following years with other iconic furniture, illustration and space design projects.
