AKABA
1986
In the late 1980s, Javier Mariscal collaborated with the Basque furniture firm Akaba on a series of pieces that marked a milestone in Spanish design.
Several iconic pieces were born from this collaboration, among them the emblematic Garriris Chair. Inspired by the comic characters created by Mariscal, the chair transferred his graphic and playful universe to the physical object. With a metal structure and ear-shaped backrest, it combined aluminum, wood and leather to create a seat that broke with convention.
Another highlight was the M.O.R. armchair, designed together with Pepe Cortés and also produced by Akaba. With stylized lines and graphic presence, this piece reinforced the experimental character of both designers and the firm's interest in emotional and expressive furniture.
Mariscal's creations for Akaba were shown at key events such as the 1989 exhibition at the Tránsito hall in Madrid, where the firm presented 28 catalog pieces, consolidating its position as a benchmark for contemporary Spanish design.
