MEMPHIS
1981
In 1981, the designer Javier Mariscal received a very special commission from Ettore Sottsass, founder of the Memphis Milano group, after the exhibition Muebles Amorales de Mariscal at the Vinçon hall, where the Dúplex stool was presented.
This radical design collective, born in Milan in the early 1980s, broke with the norms of functionalism and opted for emotion, color and provocative shapes. It was a breath of fresh air in international design, influenced by pop, Art Deco and kitsch culture.
Out of that encounter came Hilton, a cart that looks ready to dash off. "Here I am before you ask me to bring you breakfast. Even stopped, it seems to pick up speed with its gentle tilt, like something out of a comic book," comments Mariscal. Produced by Memphis Milano, Hilton embodies that playful, rebellious spirit of the group.
That same year, Mariscal also designed the Colón Table, a table with an enameled steel base and laminate top on wood, signed and produced in Italy.
