THE VIBORA

1979-1984

In the early 1980s, Javier Mariscal joined El Víbora, the most influential underground comic magazine in Spain.

In the midst of the countercultural effervescence, El Víbora offered a space of absolute freedom for graphic and narrative experimentation. There, Mariscal found the perfect terrain to develop a fresh, spontaneous look, deeply linked to urban and everyday life.

Through characters like Los Garriris, he created small visual stories full of humor, irony and tenderness. Scenarios such as the beach, bars, the streets of Barcelona or the rooftops of the Raval became the protagonists of stories where the trivial and the poetic coexisted naturally.

More than illustrations, his pages were lively compositions, with an aesthetic that went beyond the margins of traditional comics and anticipated many of the graphic resources that would define his later work.

Participating in El Víbora not only consolidated Mariscal as a comic author, but also laid the foundations of his visual identity, marking a key stage in the evolution of his artistic language.
